What is UGC-DEB?
UGC-DEB stands for University Grants Commission — Distance Education Bureau. It is the arm of UGC responsible for approving and monitoring distance and online higher education programmes in India. Every legitimate online or distance UG / PG in India operates under UGC-DEB approval.
Why UGC-DEB approval matters
- A degree from a UGC-DEB approved programme is considered equivalent to a regular (on-campus) degree for employment, government jobs, and further studies
- A degree from a non-approved programme has no legal standing — your employer can reject it, a government exam can disqualify you, a foreign visa officer can deny processing it
- “One-sitting,” “fast-track,” and “distance B.Tech” programmes are explicitly not approved and have been ruled invalid by Indian courts
How to verify any university’s UGC-DEB approval in 3 minutes
- Visit deb.ugc.ac.in (the official UGC-DEB website).
- Find the current session approved programmes list (look for ‘Approved List 2026’ or similar).
- Search for your specific university AND your specific programme (a university approval alone is not enough).
- Note the approval ID and the academic session it covers.
- Cross-reference with the university’s own website for consistency.
This is exactly what Simple Degree does before every admission.
Why session-wise approval matters
Approval is granted session-wise (each academic year). A programme that was approved for 2024 may or may not be approved for 2026. Consequences:
- Enrol in an approved session → your enrolment is generally protected even if approval changes later
- Enrol in a non-approved session → your degree’s validity is at risk, even if the university is generally UGC-recognised
The 2026 list — Simple Degree’s active UGC-DEB approved partners
- Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) — Online UG and PG programmes
- Amity University — Online UG and PG programmes
- JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) — Online UG and PG programmes

- IGNOU — open distance UG and PG programmes (especially for credit transfer)
The full UGC-DEB approved list for 2026 includes several dozen additional universities. The full list is always verifiable at deb.ugc.ac.in.
What to watch out for
- “UGC Approved University” without specifying the programme — approval is programme-specific
- “1-year degree,” “one-sitting degree,” “fast-track degree” — not UGC-recognised; court-ruled invalid
- “Distance B.Tech” — does not exist in UGC-DEB approved form
- “Government approved” (vague) vs “UGC-DEB approved” (specific) — only the latter is meaningful
